In the aftermath of Richmond’s water crisis, Hopewell’s sewage leak and extreme floods in Petersburg, Virginia officials are searching for a solution to a slate of vulnerabilities in water, sewer and storm protection systems.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Rep. Jennifer McClellan, D-4th, met with state and local officials Tuesday looking for ways to modernize aging water systems across the area.

Local officials said that righting these failing systems will take extensive financial outlays — into the hundreds of millions or billions of dollars. Warner said the best chance these governments have for getting help from the federal level would happen if they cooperate on regional utility systems.
