CHICAGO (WGN) - Just one day ago, President Donald Trump declared there'd be a surge in federal troops in Chicago, but on Wednesday evening, he walked that back.

"I want to go into Chicago and we have this incompetent governor that doesn't want us," Trump said. "So we're making the determination now. Do we go to Chicago or do we go to a place like New Orleans where we have a great governor who wants us to come in?"

Vice President JD Vance echoed the president's shift.

"There are no immediate plans, but the president has said he has the legal authority to protect American citizens, whether that's in Chicago or Washington, D.C.," Vance said.
