LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - A State Senate bill looks to keep people safe from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Under this bill, if a rental unit has a fuel burning appliance or attached garage, landlords would be required to install a detector.
If landlords don’t cooperate, it would be a civil infraction, accompanied by a $500 fine.
“We know that the deaths that happen in the home because of carbon monoxide are completely preventable,” said Sen. Stephanie Chang (D) Detroit, who introduced the bill.
Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer, which is why having a carbon monoxide detector is crucial.
“It’s colorless, odorless gas, and you could be subject to carbon monoxide poisoning in your home and not even know it,” said Delhi Township Fire Chief Brian Ball.
