KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Construction crews are expected to begin building a new sidewalk on the east side of Liberty Street between Division and Sutherland in November, a city leader said.

The Knoxville city council approved the Liberty Street Multimodal Project on Tuesday night. According to proposal documents, the project will cost up $1,293,187.00.

Councilmembers approved another $285,000 for "engineering and inspection services" related to the project in another resolution.

Cody Gentry, the coordinator of the Knoxville's Vision Zero program, said construction will happen over an area a quarter mile long. Gentry said the project's goal is to improve pedestrian safety by adding to the road's infrastructure of sidewalks, bike lanes and crosswalks.
