Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has firmly opposed deploying the National Guard for non-emergency tasks in Baltimore, advocating instead for federal support in violence prevention and law enforcement.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he will direct federal law enforcement intervention to combat crime in Baltimore. When asked about Trump’s comments Wednesday, Moore said that the deployment of the National Guard is not the right answer.

“The National Guard is not trained for this. The National Guard is trained for things like natural disasters and emergencies and deploying overseas,” Moore said. “I have too much respect for the members of our National Guard to put them on missions that they are not trained for and missions that I took an oath to make sure that we were going to always be
