BOISE, Idaho – Lindsay Hecox, a 24-year-old transgender woman, has withdrawn her Supreme Court appeal challenging Idaho's ban on transgender athletes.
Hecox, a student at Boise State University, cited intense negative public scrutiny as a reason for her decision. Her attorneys have also asked the justices to dismiss a federal appeals court ruling that was in her favor.
Hecox initially sued after Idaho's governor signed a state sports ban. She wanted to try out for the university's track team and argued the law violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.
Both a federal district court and a federal appeals court blocked the law from taking effect. Subsequently, the state appealed to the Supreme Court.
