Students arriving at the Trotter School in Roxbury will be welcomed by Mayor Michelle Wu and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper.

Students are starting the year without a statewide policy for cellphones in schools.

In Boston, students must shut off their cellphones and keep them out of sight during the school day. However, different districts have different policies in place across the state.

A bill that could ban cellphone use in classrooms statewide is making its way through Beacon Hill.
