LL Cool J once said not to call it a comeback. But there are two notable musical returns coming to metro area amphitheaters this weekend.

Alabama Shakes has been dormant for the better part of eight years while its members — most notably singer-guitarist Brittany Howard — have pursued other projects. The Grammy Award-winning group is back on the road again, albeit now a trio without drummer Steve Johnson, and even has its first new song in a decade — “Another Life” — to perform when Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg and bassist Zac Cockrell perform at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at the Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on the campus of Oakland University, Rochester Hills. Sam Evian opens.
