On average, a Boston resident would need to work upwards of 75 hours per week at a minimum wage job to be able to afford rent – and that's with a roommate.

Does that seem steep? Boston ranks eighth on the list of U.S. cities where rent costs the most hours of minimum wage work, according to Realtor.com .

While Massachusetts' minimum wage is set at $15 an hour, the median asking rent in Boston for a studio to a two-bedroom apartment is $2,993 a month, the real estate listings website said.

This means that two renters would each need to work a total of 77 hours a week at minimum wage to cover the cost of a shared apartment, using the "30% affordability rule."
