The state of Rangers this season is such that Kevin Thelwell, after witnessing Sunday's lacklustre draw with Celtic , saw it as a step forward for the team.

The goalless stalemate was far from the attractive football promised to the Ibrox faithful when Thelwell, in his first act as Ibrox sporting director, appointed Russell Martin as manager.
