CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - As a litany of gubernatorial campaigners continue to make their pitch to the people of South Carolina, one is suggesting a measure for the state to protect animals.

Lowcountry native, candidate for governor and current Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace (SC-01) says that, if elected, she wants to strengthen penalties for animal abusers and prevent them from reoffending.

As a part of this, Mace is hoping to establish an Animal Abuse Registry.

This campaign promise comes as animal rescues and law enforcement offices from across the Lowcountry have been reporting the rescues and seizures of dozens of pets from unsafe living conditions , as well some arrests in those cases .
