HIGHLANDS, NJ (WFXR) -- We now know where an Atlantic striped bass tagged during a research trip in May traveled over the summer. That satellite tag was attached during a Gray Fish Tag Research effort off the New Jersey coast. Six weeks later, the tag detached and uploaded its data to a satellite.
It turns out that 44-inch long striped bass caught, tagged, and released, swam northeast to Nantucket Island, Massachusetts before turning west toward Rhode Island.
"Those fish are coming offshore much further than coastal migration thoughts were," said Roxanne Wilmer of Gray Fish Tag Research. "They're hanging out in the Nantucket Shoals area for July and August, and then making their way back south again."
