NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – The first day of school is underway in New York City, as thousands of students file into newly opened public schools.

Seven new public schools opened on Thursday in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The new schools will accommodate over 500 new students.

Mayor Eric Adams joined students Thursday at the new HBCU Early College Prep High School, where students will be able to earn up to 64 college credits during high school.

“Today, we are opening seven new public schools across the five boroughs… expanding programs for students with autism, rolling out our first batch of 5,000 new after-school seats, and so much more as we invest in our students and families,” Adams said.
