BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - When driving through the rural reaches of the Brazos Valley, there is a good chance you will pass a corn field or two. Thousands of ears of corn are grown here in the Brazos Valley, including on John Malazzo’s farm in Burleson County.
“What we generally look for pre-harvest is we’ll peel back [the husk] and we’ll count the number of rows of kernels, ” John Malazzo said.
In counting the kernels, farmers are able to better estimate the potential of their harvest.
“When you count the kernels lengthwise, if you can get 64 on the average lengthwise, 18 rows, and if your plant population is around 30,000 plants per acre, then the yield potential is about 190 to 200 bushel,” explained Malazzo.
