Two women have died after being struck by a car on the Hume Freeway in Melbourne’s north while reportedly trying to help an injured animal.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway in Craigieburn just about 7.30pm after reports two women had been struck by a car.

The two yet-to-identified women were taken to hospital, but have since died.

“The exact circumstances of the collision are being investigated but it is believed the women may have been out of their vehicle assisting an injured animal on the road when they were struck,” police said in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is assisting police with their investigation.
