On Monday, Labour Day, a Canadian and American statutory holiday since 1894, was celebrated. It is, however, no longer a celebration of working-class solidarity, having become a day of leisure activity and family time.
The working-class parades, speeches and community events, celebrating the contribution of the working class to the building of our nations, have given way to parades (demonstrations) of protest by activists for numerous causes. The mood of these is no longer a joyful celebration of human achievement. Justifiably, they are predominantly demonstrations of resentment, rebellion and distrust of government.
The Freedom Convoy may well have been the final working-class parade in Canada, widely supported internationally, but quashed by oppressive government.
