Town says essential services will continue

Labour negotiations are coming to a head in Coaldale, with the southern Alberta municipality threatening to lock out unionized employees and the union serving a strike notice to the employer.

The Town of Coaldale served Wednesday a 72-hour lockout notice to workers represented by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. The lockout would come into effective on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, the AUPE said Wednesday that Coaldale workers voted 83 per cent in favour Tuesday of striking.

The municipality says it’s been in negotiations over a new agreement for nearly a year with the union, and the two sides have also had two days of formal mediation.
