A federal judge blocked the Trump administration's deployment of federal troops to Los Angeles on Sept. 2, claiming it was illegal.
Senior District Judge Charles R. Breyer in San Francisco wrote that the administration's use of federal troops to aid in immigration enforcement violates the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act, prohibiting the use of the U.S. military for domestic law enforcement, USA Today reported .
Trump deployed the California National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June, against the wishes of Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, to quell protests triggered by immigration raids on workplaces by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
While the decision is a victory for lawmakers against Trump's use of federal troops for immigration enforcement, it doesn't take effect
