GODFREY — Mathew David Fields, 37, of Godfrey, was the pedestrian who died in a traffic accident in Godfrey last week, the Madison County coroner's office said Tuesday.

The incident took place at about 9:20 p.m. Sept. 3 on Martin Luther King Boulevard (U.S. Highway 67) about a half mile south of Godfrey Road.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department said in a news release that a northbound pickup truck first hit the pedestrian, who was walking northbound near the edge of the street.

The driver pulled to the side of the road, the release said, at which time another vehicle hit the pedestrian.

The driver of the first vehicle left the scene but was contacted a short time later in the parking lot of his residence in Alton, the release said.
