New standalone content standards will ask students to demonstrate knowledge of everything from the development of Western civilization to the birth and development of ideals at the foundation of the U.S. Constitution.
The new guidelines were developed by content area experts and were introduced as part of the Idaho Department of Education's review and revision of statewide social studies standards.
"Ensuring that Idaho students have a thorough understanding of where many of our rights and responsibilities as Americans come from helps to ensure that they're prepared to represent these ideals as citizens and future participants in self-government," said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Debbie Critchfield. "Idaho has the opportunity to set an example of what's possible when studen
