SOUTH HAVEN, MI — Labor Day has come and gone, but Richard Mahlum still expects customers will be lined up outside of Six Chicks Scratch Kitchen for another month or two.

The breakfast and lunch eatery, at 364 Broadway St. in South Haven, is hopping each year from Memorial Day until later in the fall when temperatures start to cool in the Lake Michigan beach town.

Last year, wait times were the norm until late October, said Mahlum, who’s been Six Chicks’ dining room manager for three years.

While the restaurant — open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays — is typically busy, waits never seem to exceed 30 or 40 minutes during the week or 45 to 50 minutes on weekends, Mahlum said.

“It’s South Haven,” he said. “So, just about anywhere you go, there’s going to be a wait.”
