CHARLOTTE — The Panthers were without a couple of players in Thursday's practice, in advance of Sunday's opener at Jacksonville.

Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu (illness) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (knee) were held out on Thursday.

Ekwonu is recovering from a recent appendectomy, and head coach Dave Canales has said Friday would be the key day to see if he can return. He worked on the side Thursday.

Mathis was listed as limited Wednesday.

Left guard Damien Lewis (shoulder/ankle) was listed as limited, along with right guard Robert Hunt (foot) for the second straight day.

Defensive end A'Shawn Robinson (groin) was added to the report as a limited participant.
