Late-night host Stephen Colbert criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday after Trump labeled Chicago as the "worst and most dangerous city" on social media. During his monologue, Colbert remarked, "Yesterday, Donald Trump made a hard right onto the fascism freeway, announcing that he will deploy National Guard troops to Chicago."
Trump's comments came as he announced plans to send National Guard troops to the city as part of a crime reduction initiative. He also referred to Chicago as the "murder capital of the world." In response, Colbert said, "Worst and most dangerous? Two words: 'F--- you!'"
Colbert pointed out inaccuracies in Trump's claims, stating, "Trump slandered on: 'Chicago is the murder capital of the world!' Fun fact: no. According to the FBI, 22 major cities have higher rates of murder than Chicago—one of them being Birmingham, Alabama."
The comedian expressed his affection for Chicago and its residents, saying, "This is a scary time for the people of Chicago. And I love the people of Chicago. I used to be a people of Chicago. In fact, I lived there 11 years. I started my career there. We took our show to Chicago last summer, had an amazing time. But come to think of it, you know what? A lot of us did come home murdered."
Colbert also directed a harsh message at Trump, saying, "go f--- yourself" after the president celebrated the cancellation of his show. He added, "How dare you, sir? Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism? Go f--- yourself."
Colbert's audience reacted with boos when he addressed rumors about Trump's death over Labor Day weekend, stating, "Trump is very much alive." In response to Colbert's comments, a White House spokeswoman said, "While talentless hack Stephen Colbert continues to spiral over the cancellation of his failed, low-ratings TV show, President Trump is busy making our country greater than ever before and delivering for the American people."
