Based on the ending of the third Sonic film, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 seems ready to show Sonic facing alongside Amy Rose against an army of Metal Sonics. Given how strong Sonic's metal doppelgangers seem to be, it is possible that Sonic will need a power upgrade in the next film.

So far, Sonic has gotten stronger with each movie , whether it's due to making new allies or acquiring new items like the Master Emerald. Since the Master Emerald seemed to be lost after Shadow's disappearance at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 , Sonic may need to find another weapon that he can use to save the world.
