Former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican who is running for an open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan next year, wants Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to ask President Donald Trump "for backup" in fighting crime in the city.

“The numbers don’t lie: Detroit has become a hub for violent crime,” Rogers, who has Trump's endorsement in the race next year, said in a statement on Sept. 4. “We have got to make our cities safe again. The mayor of Detroit should be on the phone with the president now calling for backup."
