Longtime NFL star turned St. Michael Catholic head coach Philip Rivers saw two unique quarterback traits in his son Gunner at an early age.

“At 7, 8, 9 years old, he could throw the ball accurately, and he could throw it with anticipation,” Rivers said of his oldest son. “He had ability to see it, anticipate it and throw it accurately. You can coach it all you want, but it’s hard to make someone be more accurate.”

Gunner, in his third year as the starter for the Class 4A No. 2 Cardinals, has started his junior year with pinpoint accuracy. The 6-foot-3.5, 210-pound Rivers has completed 40 of his 51 passes for 431 yards and 9 TDs in St. Michael wins over Bayside Academy and John Carroll. He played only a half in last week’s blowout win over John Carroll.
