LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Imagine less land spent on parking as housing is built for the growing population of the Las Vegas valley.

That's what's happening just west of the UNLV campus, where Elon Musk's Boring Co. is moving ahead on a six-story, 132-unit apartment building designed for an urban Las Vegas that depends on a new transit option: the Las Vegas Loop.

The Clark County Commission approved permits for the project on Wednesday, allowing a plan for 24 parking spots when traditional county codes would mandate 189.

"This really is new for us," Commissioner Jim Gibson said. "I think a lot of us think that the valley is overparked in so many ways. But this is, of course, at the other extreme."

The project is planned at 4300 Paradise Road, right across the street from the Virgin Las Vegas
