MONTGOMERY, Ala. ( WSFA ) - Two Alabama lawmakers have officially prefiled bills that would expand death penalty-eligible cases in the state.

In July, Sen. April Weaver (R-Brierfield) and Rep. Matt Simpson (R-Daphne), announced in a press conference that they would be filing legislation to make certain first-degree sex crimes against kids eligible for the death penalty.

Earlier that month, four men were arrested following concerns of sexual abuse of children in an underground bunker in Brent. As of Sept. 4, eight people have been charged with a variety of charges, including rape, sodomy, human trafficking, and kidnapping.

“ The Child Predator Death Penalty Act " is very important not only to my district, but to the whole state of Alabama," said Sen. Weaver.
