JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A Missouri House committee has advanced a proposal to redraw the state’s congressional map, setting the stage for a heated floor debate next week.
The mid-decade redistricting effort, led by Gov. Mike Kehoe and backed by former President Donald Trump, would split Kansas City into multiple congressional districts. Republicans argue the change better reflects the state’s population. Democrats say it weakens urban representation and could cost them one of their two congressional seats.
At a hearing Wednesday, democrat and House Minority Leader Ashley Aune out of Kansas City pressed for transparency.
“I have yet to see any data from these maps,” she said, questioning whether the bill’s sponsor Rep. Dirk Deaton had demographic breakdowns to show the line
