Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced her intention to sue the Alabama High School Athletic Association on Thursday.
Ivey announced the lawsuit alongside Alabama Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter, from Dekalb County. The lawsuit was filed around 4 p.m. on Thursday. The lawsuit stems from the AHSAA's stance on eligibility surrounding transfers due to the CHOOSE Act and that any transfer would have to sit out a year.
“I remain in strong opposition to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s decision to sideline CHOOSE Act participants from competing in school sports and am committed to seeing all Alabama students have a fair chance on the playing field. Speaker Ledbetter and I have jointly filed a lawsuit to reverse this wrong.”
