The city election is less than two months away. One candidate, Paul Bustamante , wants to schedule a special election after the winners take office.
He says residents of Santa Fe should decide in 2026 whether to rebuild the desecrated Soldiers' Monument, which was the Plaza's centerpiece for 152 years.
A candidate for the open City Council seat in District 2, Bustamante says voters should make the decision because elected officials for almost five years have tolerated the monument's scarred remains.
"I don't see that having a special election would be out of consideration," Bustamante said Thursday. "Already there has been so much time and money wasted on this."
