KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Forestry Commission is staying at the scene into the late evening hours after a woods fire erupted in Kershaw County on Thursday afternoon.

The Kershaw County Fire Service said the fire occurred in the 4600 block of Newman Road in Bethune and had grown to seven acres as of about 7 p.m. Officials said the fire was located on the Santee-Cooper transmission line right-of-way, where trucks can't gain access. As such, the South Carolina Forestry Commission was called out to bulldoze a containment line around the fire.
