Alan Joyce, the controversial former boss of Qantas, continues to cast a shadow over the airline.

The national carrier's annual report, released on Friday, shows Mr Joyce will pick up his final bonus, a stash of shares worth $3.8 million on Friday's market.

This time last year, the national carrier announced what it deemed were serious "penalties" against the recently departed chief executive following a string of scandals involving everything from dubious ticket sales on ghost flights to the illegal sacking of more than 1,800 workers .

While the headlines proclaimed he was docked more than $9 million , Mr Joyce departed with $14.4 million.
