The Northern Territory government urgently passed legislation to establish a new police rank this week, after pulling anti-discrimination reforms from the agenda.
On Thursday, the Country Liberal Party (CLP) unexpectedly introduced a bill to establish the new Police Public Safety Officer (PPSO) role, which will see transit safety and public housing officers transitioned into the police force.
In June the government announced its plan to create the role, which will allow officers to carry guns on buses and in public housing complexes after undertaking a training course.
