A mining contractor has been fined more than $500,000 over the death of a Perth fly-in, fly-out worker in Western Australia's Goldfields.
Experienced driller Terry Hogan was dismantling a drill rig at the Hamlet underground mine near Kambalda, 630 kilometres east of Perth, when he was struck by falling rocks and "killed instantly" in October 2022.
The WorkSafe prosecution of Mr Hogan's employer, RUC Mining Contractors, was one of the first cases under WA's new workplace health and safety laws.
RUC was initially charged with failing to ensure the health and safety of workers and as a result causing the death of a worker and exposing another to the risk of death or serious injury.
But after long negotiations with prosecutors the company pleaded guilty in July to a downgraded charge, whic
