The prospect of introducing a wildcard round before the AFL finals is gathering serious momentum at league headquarters, 7NEWS Melbourne’s Xander McGuire has revealed.

The topic has been broached several times in recent years and chief executive Andrew Dillon again refused to rule out the idea last week.

He claimed a wildcard round “would have added a lot” to this year’s impossibly tense top-eight race, which went down to the very last matches of the season.

“I’m not ruling it in or out,” Dillon said at the time.

Channel 7’s Caroline Wilson described it as “the strongest” Dillon has been on the idea after previously shutting it down, with McGuire now reporting the AFL is “looking into” the plan.

“Plenty of intrigue around league headquarters as a huge fixture change looms,” he said.
