Conservative construction tycoon Anutin Charnvirakul is Thailand's new prime minister, becoming the third person to hold the country's top job in three years.

After a week of chaotic deal-making between rival political parties, he was elected by the country's parliament on Friday.

The government was thrown into upheaval last month after the constitutional court dismissed former prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for ethics violations during Thailand's recent border conflict with neighbouring Cambodia.

Anutin was mobbed by a scrum of journalists as he left the parliament.

"I will work my hardest, every day, no holidays, because there is not a lot of time," Anutin said, his face lit up by bursts of camera flashes.

"We have to ease problems quickly."
