Gov. Greg Abbott signed two bills on Friday aimed at preventing tragedies like the one that took place last July at Camp Mystic during the Central Texas floods, where 27 campers and counselors died when flash flooding struck the summer camp.

"Every child who goes to camp should come home to their families," Abbott said in Austin, accompanied by legislative leaders and parents of children who died at Camp Mystic.

The families stood behind Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick when they signed the bill and after, Abbott gave each family a pen that he used to sign the bill with.

Senate Bill 1, also known as Heaven's 27 bill, and House Bill 1, also known as the Camper Act, aim to ensure safety in camp operations in case of emergencies, according to lawmakers. The bills, now laws, will require
