Stargazers are in for double celestial drama this month: The September full moon coincides with a total lunar eclipse.
On Sept. 7-8, the "harvest moon" will reach its peak fullness before slipping into Earth’s shadow, creating a total lunar eclipse , also known as a "blood moon."
The last lunar eclipse was earlier this year, in March . To catch September’s eclipse, look toward the eastern sky after sunset. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to view with the naked eye; no special glasses are needed.
