SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Sacramento Congresswoman Doris Matsui spoke out Friday after she was able to access, after repeated rejected requests, a facility that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is using to detain people.

In recent weeks, she has requested that ICE allow her to access the John E. Moss Federal Building and conduct an inspection. She was first denied access on Aug. 22 and unsuccessfully tried again days later, despite being entitled to tour the site that's located in her district. Both times were unannounced.

Matsui and other city leaders stated they received reports over what they called “deplorable conditions for people being detained in the building’s basement.” Those allegations include limited water, lack of food, lack of access to restrooms, inadequate ventilation
