VERONA, N.J. (PIX11) – Around 1,200 tacks and spikes were found on a walking trail behind a New Jersey elementary school on Tuesday, according to authorities.

Police said the sharp objects were discovered in the wooded area behind Brookdale Avenue School, which runs parallel to Sunset Avenue in Verona. The trail is often used by children and parents to get to the school, according to authorities.

Police believe the spikes were deliberately placed on the trail to damage bicycles and animals. Officers and the Verona Department of Public Works have been walking the trail to clean up any leftover tacks.

The principal of Brookdale Avenue School sent a letter to parents on Tuesday, alerting them of the discovery.
