The Potawatomi Zoo has announced that one of its large animals will be leaving this fall.

The Zoo’s southern white rhinoceros, Masamba, will be moving to The Wilds, a 10,000 acre conservation center in Ohio.

As part of a breeding recommendation from the Southern White Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan, the move will allow Masamba to be introduced to a group of female rhinos with the goal of breeding.

Masamba has been with the Potawatomi Zoo since 2019 when he was just three years old. While a date for the move has not yet been set, the Zoo says it will likely happen this fall.

They also expect to receive a new southern white rhinoceros in the spring of next year.
