With the city backing its bid, the Frontenacs applied to host the 2027 Memorial Cup, major-junior hockey’s showcase event.

The Canadian Hockey League also had bids from three other OHL franchises: the Kitchener Rangers, the Guelph Storm and the Niagara IceDogs.

On Thursday, the Memorial Cup site-selection committee cut the field in half, the politest of thanks-but-no-thanks possible in the circumstances.

The Frontenacs and the St. Catharines-based IceDogs are out, Kitchener and Guelph moving on.

For their part, the Rangers and the Storm had history on their side or, at least, tournament history.
