TOWN OF CLAYTON, N.Y. (WWTI) - The Jefferson County Public Health Service announced on Friday that a bat in the town of Clayton has tested positive for rabies.
JCPHS was notified by the state that the animal tested positive for the disease. Public health officials said there are no known human or pet exposures.
The raccoon is the 13th animal in the county to return a positive test for rabies. A total of 10 raccoons and two foxes have tested positive for rabies.
Rabies is a fatal disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It can take several weeks to several months for rabies symptoms to appear. Early treatment after an exposure can prevent rabies in humans and in pets who are up to date on vaccination.
