SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - A large Mexican Independence Day festival that’s held annually in South Bend has been canceled for this year, and organizers point to immigration raids elsewhere as the reason for the move.
The annual event attracts thousands of people and features various performances and food options.
“We always have a lot of people here,” says Adriana Ponce, secretary of Radio Sabor Latino. “We do the party for the festival, for scholarships, for raised money.”
However, this year people will not be able to have the same experience. That’s because Radio Sabor Latino decided to cancel it due to the current climate surrounding immigration.
“We don’t want to scare people, but we don’t want to put them at risk,” Ponce says.
