The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is continuing its rural infrastructure upgrades in Greene County with a planned bridge replacement near a public school campus in Center, a few miles from the county seat of Waynesburg.

The existing bridge on Hargus Creek Road serves West Greene Middle and Senior High School as well as the West Greene School District superintendent’s office. It was constructed in 1939 and reconstructed in 1949.

PennDOT said in a presentation released Thursday that the bridge was in “poor condition,” with visibly cracking concrete and pavement and exposed rebar, or steel reinforcements.

The project will involve roadway reconstruction up to 150 feet south of the bridge and 250 feet north of it. The new bridge will have wider lanes — increasing from 9 feet to 1
