Texas just passed what the anti-abortion movement hopes will be the next big blow against abortion access. The statute, H.B. 7 , is meant to be the sequel to one of the anti-abortion movement’s great successes: another Texas law called S.B. 8 , which allowed private citizens to sue providers who performed a procedure more than six weeks after a patient’s last menstrual period for at least $10,000. H.B. 7 allows any private citizen to sue anyone who mails, prescribes, distributes, manufactures, or provides abortion medication in Texas for at least $100,000, even if they are based in a state where abortion rights are protected.
