ST. LOUIS — Late one spring night, Oliveri Jones left her room in a St. Louis assisted living facility carrying a container full of cooking oil.

She walked to a microwave and heated the oil until it was scalding, prosecutors said this week.

Then she walked back to her room and threw the oil on her sleeping roommate, Doren Davis.

Davis, 63, had been annoying her, Jones eventually told police.

"I did it because I wanted to do it," said Jones, 69, according to police body camera footage played in court.

Davis died nearly a month later. A medical examiner found the cause was a lung condition exacerbated by the burns.

During a trial this week, a jury was set to decide whether Jones' actions constituted murder.
