OAKLAND COUNTY, MI – An 86-year-old man was killed in a crash after he suffered a medical emergency and drove off the roadway, police said.

Waterford Township police responded to the fatal crash at 7:55 a.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in the area of Pontiac Lake Road and Airport Road, Chief Scott Underwood said in a news release.

Police said the driver, who was the only occupant in the car, fell unconscious after suffering a medical issue. The vehicle then ran off the roadway, striking a utility pole and tree.

First responders found the man unresponsive in the car. He did not appear to have substantial injuries when he was removed from the vehicle, police said.

The 86-year-old was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was not named by police.
