HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - It’s one of the most common complaints to the I-Team: scammers stealing families SNAP benefits. Now the state of Connecticut is taking action to try and prevent the theft.
Kimberly Byrd in Hartford is one of the people who called the I-Team tipline about her benefits being stolen. She gets $162 loaded onto her EBT card each month through federal SNAP benefits. The benefits are what used to be called food stamps. In May, more than $100 of Byrd’s SNAP benefits went missing. She called the number on her EBT card to try and find out what happened.
“He said, did you go to New Jersey? I said, what am I going to go to New Jersey for? Well, that’s where your food stamp benefits were swiped from,” said Byrd.
